Nigerian Pidgin (a middle tongue that mixes the grammar and verbiage of indigenous languages such as Yoruba and Igbo, with English) is not easily understood by the uninitiated. As a musician, I hear it as rhythm and song. It often hits my ear as a delightful jazz scatt. The prechorus of Give Me was born from the rhythm of the ‘patter, patter’ of playfully bustling, romantic banter of folks in Lagos, Nigeria. It combines the bounce of Nigerian High Life music with the Kizomba of Angola. The mirroring and push/pull of Kizomba dance are happily married with sultry R&B vocals in this hypnotic tune that irresistibly draws you to the dance floor, and perhaps, closer to that someone.
